try this...for the season!

There is so much to write...so much to write..so, I always postpone the ceremony of writing!! The music season is here now and Chennai is having the feel of celebration and festivity. I like it all. I feel very happy to be here. I just wish that rasikas would do something different every year like the artistes too!!
Chennai is a place where Vocal music is appreciated more than instrumental music. Instrumental music is beyond language and religion. So, world over the appreciation that they get is remarkable. But in chennai...why are rasikas drawn more only to Vocal? why cant they try something different this time? How about alternating between one Vocal concert and one Instrument concert?? want to try???

Hello Madam,

I am Saranya, an ardent fan of yours. I play veena too. Shri.S.Srinivasan sir is my guru. Every season, when I see so less people for a veena concert, I feel really bad. Even the sabhas dont have a lot of veena concerts. A vocalist can move on to the prime slot sooner than an instrument artist. Only when this situation improves, will more artists take up instruments as the main profession.

But there is a brighter side to this too sharanya. Veena is a very much sought after instrument in all other countries. Veena concerts are always sold out! and people appreciate the grandeur and the elegance of this instrument. so, it will rock in Chennai too soon..

Yes mam, hope our own people learn to appreciate its greatness soon! BTW I am trying to find your CDs/DVDs but couldn't get much.. Saw from your website that you have a recording company yourself.
Would it be possible to ship CDs/DVDs to US? Where can I buy them?

Hello Jayanthi,

I am glad to see your post after many months and hope to read many more post of yours in the years to come.

My ask a rasika would be understand the technicalities of Kutcheri - specific to Veena instrument and your thoughts on how do you think more awareness can be brought about in India for Instrumental concert.

Also would appreciate if you can blog about your favorites for this season -and how do you go about
selecting songs and preparation for a concert.

I am going to be there next week in chennai to attend one of your concerts and hope many more do the same. Lets hope this is a Beginning year for a change in rasikas moods

Wish I were there to catch you live :(
Ironic and flattering as it may seem, I have genuinely been more inclined to instrumental music right from when I was kid, myself being a vocalist! Don't know why... but yes- I know people who have a strong preference for vocal. Really hope the trend changes soon. Hopefully unique concerts like Kanyakumari ma'am's 70 violin ensemble helps in this respect...
Have a blast this season and eagerly awaiting your cd release from this year!

Your remarks about the great popularity of veena outside India resonate with me -- I'm an American in New York who found your music via emusic.com. This moment I'm listening to Raghuvara, on Veenai Jayanthi Kumaresh. It's a wonderful, meditative piece. I love your music and look forward to exploring it more deeply. Do you have any New York appearances scheduled?

Thank you for the nice response for Veena!! No, I am not coming to US until mid year 2010...atleast, as of now...will post on my site when i do. In April it is time for UK :-))
Sindhu, hope to see you here atleast next year...let the music play on....and keep composing :-)

Jayanthiji,

Ironic in that I like instrumental more (as a westerner I can't understand the sahithyam), but i have forced myself to appreciate the vocal....

Anyway, I tried an email but I never heard from you...

In thiruvayar, would it be possible to get a recording on your academy lec dem?

I think as per your other question, getting people to appreciate carnatic more asa music and less as devotional...look at John Mclaughlin. If you want to appeal to that aspect, you have to appeal to the improvisational aspects of carnatic music. Look at the rhythm, the melody. This is a medium of intense sophistication and acuity. If you want to appeal to that, I think clinics explaining to exponents of other forms the value of carnatic music, that will be the answer.

Happy new year.

Joe

Yes Joe,
You are absolutely right..When we jump out of the box of language, we see the big world that opens out to us in terms of rhythm and melody...
